Programmers Christmas Present

So I’m just a bit geeky. One of my Christmas presents was Ted Neward’s “Enterprise Java” . I can recommend this book wholeheartedly to any .NET developer who needs to work on larger scale systems. And even if you don’t, its a wonderful read. One caveat, I imagine C# coders would have a much easier time with it then VB.NET coders. I’m only half-way through and realized that I need to read it again. There is so much good advice it is well worth the money.

One of my favorite aspects of Ted’s writing is the way he goes about code examples. Whoever heard of illustrating a transaction based two-phased commit scenario by using the classic American wedding ceremonyas example. I loved it! By taking every day situations and wrapping them in code, the reader is not distracted by trying to figure out what the heck Ted’s code is supposed to do. Everybody knows what a wedding looks like! As a result of this approach I can concentrate on the meaning of the code sample and what it is trying to illustrate. Very cool.
