Painless Project Management with FogBugz
That’s the title of a new book by Mike Gunderloy, one of my favorite bloggers and authors.
I should tell you that Fogbugz is produced by Joel Spolsky who in my opinion seems to be rather taken with himself. I always thought Joel was a bit of a windbag. If I talked about my adventurous past as often as he brings up his former employment with Microsoft, this blog would be quite full of links over here. So yes, I thought he was well spoken … but a windbag nonetheless. Consequently was I ever surprised to find a book that not only points out how Mike has been using Fogbugz but also lists all sorts of cool features of the product. Hmm perhaps I was a bit harsh in my criticism of Joel. Maybe he is a more of a “gust-pocket”
As described in the book, Fogbugz 4.0 has many improvements that make it a worthy tool to consider. I think what really piqued my interest was a section dealing with source control integration. This section pointed out just how deep Sourcegear Vault is integrated with Fogbugz. I was quite amazed.
Another section of the book showed how one could add a small Fogbugz agent to an app which then would create FogBugz error cases automatically whenever the app errored out. The data is sent via Http into the the bug tracking system. Nice!
After I was finished reading (its only about 180 pages) I had visions and dreams of a system that allows automatic bug reports from app errors, as well as email bug reports by customers and co-workers. The error reports are tied into source control so that whenever a bug is fixed the bug report can show the actual diff file listing from the source control system… top it all off with a scheduled “daily build and smoke” system driven by Finalbuilder and I could be close to software architect heaven ! Tell me this doesn’t totally rock !
