Opinion Column: Shuffle’s Got a Secret

Bill Machrone at PC Mag just about blew me away today when I read his findings concerning the iPod Shuffle. I always thought the Shufle was a bit of a joke. After reading Bill’s article I am singing a different tune. Basically he describes how most MP3 players cannot maintain a decent square sine wave when tested with an oscilloscope. Maintaining such a wave is the primary indicator of audiophile quality. Sure they look mostly decent when run alone, but once there is a little load on the system - like the load generated by earbuds - everything goes to hell. As a matter of fact the iPod Mini that my wife and daughter just about died to have for Christmas are the worst offenders. Guess what ! According to Bill the iPod Shuffle is the ONLY PLAYER THAT MAINTAINS THE NEAR PERFECT SQUARE SINE WAVE EVEN UNDER LOAD. Amazing. So you know what I’ll be getting myself pretty soon :)

Now if I only had a source of information on decent earbuds…..
