SQL Server Reporting Services has become more and more popular, in no small measure due to the fact that it is free. When used in web applications, there is often an requirement to present the user a report as PDF file. For all of the obvious reasons (fidelity, print accuracy etc) . One of our current projects […]

Today was the T-Mobile release date of the new Blackberry 8330 Curve Smartphone. What a great deal. Now some might argue that the IPhone is the best cell phone on the market. I am not one of them. Yes, of course the design factor of the IPhone is fantastic, but from a practical standpoint I […]

My wife has a colleague who is one of the hardest working doctors I have ever seen (or heard about). He works almost as hard as programmers
One if the benefits that this gentleman allows himself as a result of all his hard work are a few very expensive cars. He owns several, but […]

I have been a pretty stalwart RedGate customer for a number of years. Which means in practical terms my review of this product is born out of hard-core usage in real production settings.

Samuel Dean, over at Web Worker Daily, wrote this very nice and comprehensive article dealing with wi-fi around the house. I especially liked the idea of a usb to wifi hub that allows you to get to printers or hard drives as attached devices on the network. That’s very handy. Read article.

Our industry depends on the need to communicate precisely. Imprecise communication leads to errors in software. Agreed? That’s probably one reason why people take exception to folks being somewhat free-wheeling with the terminology we use, especially when they coin new terms for which we have perfectly good and descriptive words in English.

In the past months I have posted here and there how I suspect LINQ really sucks in a variety of ways. I’ve pointed to friends and colleagues who have had their share of trouble with it. Hopefully nobody passes judgement on the fact that that I purposefully stayed away from using it and instead just […]

David Carr has a very interesting analysis of the potential cost of losing a developer. Some of the statistics listed in the comments are hilarious. Especially the one where a gentleman was using a mechanism that reminded me of handicapping horses. This percent versus that percent. Funny stuff.
On a more serious note, I have managed […]

I always look forward to Larry O’Brien’s list of Jolt Award finalists and winners. Over the years I have had a lot of success buying books or products that made this list.
This year I’ve obtained several books on the finalists lists and one software product - stpBA Storyboarding. It is a very unique product […]

When it comes to IDE’s I have tried just about everything there is under the sun and my favorite tool is still VS. However, it amazes me what can be had for FREE these days. Have you ever looked at Aptana? Check it out.
Or what about MonoDevelop (and of course Mono itself)? Ok that […]

After returning from a wonderful vacation, its back to business. We are currently working on an interesting WCF project in which I actually get to dogfood our service implementation. At least thats the plan. Working with a distributed team, Jeff one of my guys, is located in Northern California. He happens to be responsible for huge […]
